The first Miss Black America pageant was held as a protest against the exclusion of Black women from the Miss America pageant. Saundra Williams, a 19-year-old activist from Philadelphia, won the crown and the title of Miss Black America, sending a powerful message to the world: Black is beautiful, too. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ
