11. In 1921, New Jersey hosted the first Miss America pageant.
Margaret Gorman, a 16-year-old high school student, won the competition and was crowned the “Golden Mermaid.”
In 1941, the competition was renamed the Miss America pageant.
12. The nickname “New Jersey” was based on a lie.
Alfred Heston, a historian, wrote about it in his book about New Jersey.
It turns out that Heston made up the nickname and claimed Browning was behind it to lend credibility to the story, which has since been proven by archived recordings of Browning’s speech at the World’s Fair.
13. The oldest operating lighthouse in America is located in New Jersey.
The Sandy Hook Lighthouse was built in the 18th century and has been in continuous operation since 1764.
The only times the lighthouse did not illuminate the night sky were during wars, including the Civil War and World Wars I and II.

The state’s population density is so high because of the Hudson County, which has the top four most populated municipalities in the entire country.
