The year that Johnny Desmond recorded this familiar tune, performed on national television upon the annual crowning of a brand new Miss America, was also the year that early-TV game show host Bert Parks took over MC duties for that glittery pageant….a role he would play for 25 years. A recording of Parks singing “Miss America” continued to be featured for many years after his departure from the show and subsequent passing in 1992.

Songwriter Bernie Wayne also wrote, or contributed to the writing of, “Blue Velvet,” “Vanessa,” “Laughing On The Outside (Crying On The Inside),” ”Port Au Prince” and the “Chock Full O’Nuts Is The Heavenly Coffee” jingle.

Transferred and digitally processed from the original 45rpm: Coral promo 9-61505 – Miss America! (Wayne) by Johnny Desmond, orchestra and chorus conducted by Glenn Osser

  1. Am from the Johnny Desmond era and had forgotten his great voice so was pleased to stumble on to this rendition of Miss America. Will play this for my beloved wife of many years. Hope she will enjoy it as I accompany Johnny D. In performing it at some time prior to breakfast this morning!

  2. The commercial got me here too. I used to live on 18th St in NYC and one of my neighbors used to be the guy that assisted the contestants through the last week of the pageant (he taught them how to sit, walk , wear the crown if they won etc). He even had a crown in his apartment that he even let me try on. One can dream…

  3. it is not a bad song..but it has become associated with cheezeballity…JOhnny sings it over the top here…trying to be Mario Lanza…Bernie Wayne was an excellent songwriter..but the stigma associated with the song has turned most people off. i usually love GLen Osser but this record sucks. You can hardly hear the orchestra for the vocal

  4. Ha ha. Gee, who would buy this record?? Even in 1955, I can't figure why someone would like this song, or buy a recording of it. Did it make the pop charts? It's bad enough to hear it once a year on the TV, but I wouldn't want to hear on my home record player, hi Fi, etc. I bet my mom liked this. I was born when this song came out.
