As a fan of pageants since the early 1980s, I’ve witnessed the crowning of 40 women as Miss Universe. To get into the countdown spirit, I’ve put together my Top 10 favourite winning performances since the first Miss Universe I watched, in 1983.

These are the most memorable finals night efforts from start to finish with demonstrations of grace, elegance, humour, wit, spontaneity, sincerity, intelligence and inspirational words. Not just a single mic drop moment or a jaw-dropping evening gown – these are the best all-round performances that I still love to rewatch from time to time.

Picking just 10 women from the past 40 years was no easy feat, and my list will no doubt differ from yours. Please let me know who your favourites have been, but please keep your comments respectful.

  1. We have the same number 1, Alicia Machado in 1996. I was a high school freshman when she was crowned and now that I'm 40, her performance is still the most memorable for me.

  2. Well, is a good top. But, to be honest, I am so impressed with Pia's position. I try to find just one reason to her victory but it's imposible to me. Actually, I think it was a bad joke from IMG organisation as well as the Trump's joke in 2012 with Olivia's crown. I miss Amelia Vega and Oxana in the top or at least in the memourable mentions.

  3. My favorite MU performance was that of Puerto Rico' ZULEYKA RIVERA in 2006. She excelled in all three rounds of elimination, especially in the evening gown competition.

Other memorable performances by previous MU winners include those by: Venezuela's MARITZA SAYALERO in 1979, Russia's OXANA FEDOROVA in 2002, Angola's LEILA LOPES in 2011, and Puerto Rico's DENISE QUIÑONES in 2001.

  4. I’m surprised not to see Amelia Vega here to be quite honest! Also there were more queens from IMG era than expected so that was interesting to see!
    My top 5 randon order:
    Amelia Vega
    Dayana Mendoza
    Pia Wurtzbach
    Brook Lee
    Lara Dutta

  5. 1998 WENDY FITZWILLIAM T&T
    2022 R'BONNEY GABRIEL USA
    2003 AMELIA VEGA D,/REPUBLIC
    2008 DAYANA MENDOZA VENEZUELA
    2007 RIYO MORI JAPAN

  6. Zozibini Tunzi is so deserving of her win. But have you ever wondered if she might have heard the final question because her long earrings allowed her to hear it?

  7. As a South African, and coming from the same province, I had high hopes for Zozibini Tunzi, and when they got to the interview round, I KNEW she had bagged it, which was a relief because I was not a fan of the favorite, Miss Puerto Rico.

  8. I fully agree about Alicia Machado of Venezuela. I can't remember EVER wanting someone to win more. She charmed and mesmerised us on the night. I was delghted! Then I wrnt and looked at her Miss Venezuela win, and saw, as was the norm for Miss Venezuela winners, how much work she'd had done. Those girls were panel beated into perfection, physically, mentally, style-wise, pasarela-wise. Osmel Sousa was the consummate pageant director.

  9. I 100% agree with number uno, my girl from the gateway of South America was the clear winner in Las Vegas, and the list is solid, I love that you grew up in the golden era of pageantry and you still remember their iconic performances😍
