“I would have taken measures to prevent becoming pregnant,” says Marvellous, a teenager and a mother in Epworth, Zimbabwe. “I was uninformed because the topic is taboo in our community.” Marvellous found information and support for young women in her situation at the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Edith Clinic in Mbare.
Supportive sexual and reproductive health care is important for everyone, but around the world, many people face damaging obstacles to accessing this care. For many women and girls, including cis and trans women, societal taboos and fears often prevent them from finding timely, appropriate information and services. Unmarried women, adolescents, sex workers, women in the LGBTQIA+ community, and others are often excluded from health care.
MSF is working to reduce the barriers to health care for marginalized and excluded people and people in crisis and to help them participate in their own health and well-being. Contraception, protection from sexually transmitted infections, safe abortion care, and counseling are some of the services that all women should have access to for an active, positive sexual life.
