  1. While that may be true, as someone who competes in pageants, I think it's important to know that there is a list of dozens, possibly hundreds of questions, and sometimes the contestants know ahead of time what they'll be, but sometimes they don't. They have to prepare for anything and the questions they are asked is picked at random.

  2. Bejko-02-Murphy: I don't think that those questions are made on the spot. Looks like they prepared their answers before to me. The majority of these questions were focusing on a particular aspect and the contestants really wanted to say what they believed so they did not fully answer to the question or they did, but superficially. For example when they ask what can we do to protect ourselves from the information we share on the web she only says to stop and think before acting and changes topic.

  3. Fang-02-Murphy: As Early indicates, these girls are required to answer somewhat grand and big questions in 30 seconds with the stressful music and pressure from audiences, so the meanings or answers to the questions are not important any more. Overall, the meaning of their appearances are to bring entertainment for audiences.

  4. Zhang-02-Murphy
the second and the third questions gets a little tricky as the second one requires a little knowledge about what is democracy and why it is impossible for political rivalries to "love each other", not to say "support each other", which may, if lucky enough, give US an authoritarian government.

  5. de la Pena-05-Murphy: Like the article we read, this just shows how the pageant is all about politics. The contestants all danced around the questions, provided "politically correct" answers, and they were very vague. None of their answers really meant anything.

  6. Allard-03-Murphy: I thought that each contestants answers was vague; as previous posts have said. I felt like they barely answered the question or actually provided their stance on a topic. When they did take a stance, they would never really say anything to back up their argument.

  7. Moyo-05-Murphy
The contestants seemed just to be restating what was asked of them without giving much perspective. They didn't seem very knowledgeable in what was being asked of them.

  8. Bivins-03-Murphy: Yeah it seems as though they answered their question with caution and vaguely because it is safe to not lean on one side of an argument. If they do that then they would be judged on a whole different thing than just Ms. America.

  9. De Tar-03-Murphy I definitely agree with Erez, the answers were very generic and too broad to really see what they felt. Especially the girl having to answer the internet posting, the way she said it did not really give an answer on thinking about what you post before posting it, just that she is careful about it.

  10. Eglow-03-Murphy. I agree again with what Erez said. They did not have enough time to answer the question. Also, some of them did not answer the question they talked about the topic as a whole and not the specific question.

  11. Wang-03-Murphy: Early stated that, "it wishes to convince the public that it is a common entertainment while simultaneously wishing to convey that it is more than mere entertainment" (533). Asking the contestants social-issue questions were typical endeavors to try to make the show sound serious.

  12. Houle-03-Murphy
It is fascinating to see that the women are all clinging to each other. They are also supporting one another and seem to get excited for one another. Ms. Washington also commented on the fact that they all were together in this. The explicit message is that they all get along, but from watching reality tv our culture expects that to be a lie. Therefore creating a implicit message that they are all pretending to be friendly.

  13. Vague? Hardly. They only have 10 seconds. Imagine an audience of millions watching you, with hot cameras in your face and you have to think of an answer in 10 seconds. Most people could not do it.

  14. 3:20 Good for Brooke Burke. The MC was going to screw around with stupid comments & waste time while the girls' hearts were pounding. Not cool.

  15. They answer the questions like robots, no creatives answers, they put no thought inthem at all, all vague, pretty much rehearsed answers. It's almost impossible to find perfection in the world, this contest is the proof. Extremelly atractive women, with a lot potential, high IQ maybe, however not much creativity.

  16. Guerrero-02-Murphy:

The first video I'm really interested in watching. Most of the answers are vague and non of them challenge convention or go for a controversial answer, showing that in the same way as this girls try to fit physically in they also try to fit in a moral way with society. Probably the only useful answer is that of Miss Oklahoma of "think before you speak or act" which is just a cliche, making me wonder if this girls have any thoughts of their own.

  17. Badon-02-Murphy: So for one thing, they're answers were short and lacked detail. I even felt that the last contestant didn't even answer her question but just went around from giving an actual answer. It's also pretty difficult to answer the world's problems in a 30 second.

  18. Theisen-02-MurphyI really hope there are more points throughout this competition that the contestants get a chance to speak in that I didn't get to see. If thats not the case then its really sad to eliminate people without hearing them speak. I have to say if this is not scripted than their responses were decent for being on the spot.

  20. Hartnett-02-Murphy
These answers are hilarious. Most of these girls are so very fake and add so much to their answers that are unnecessary to the question just to pad up the answer and make it seem like they know what they're talking about. I cant believe this is supposed to be entertaining.

  21. Zhang-02-Murphy: I noticed that the girls were not necessarily answering the question they were being asked. I agree with Phou that these girls prepared numerous answers for possible topics beforehand and they choose the best answer for the question asked. hence the vague answers.

  22. Phou-03-Murphy: All the answers are vague because they prepared numerous answers beforehand to be ready for any question, then they pick the best answer for the asked question.
