Miss Hawaii Brooke Lee was third place in this round with 9.450, barely ahead than miss Florida with 9.443. This was really close call for Brooke!
Brook Lee barely made top 3 at 3rd place. Florida finished 4th with a mediocre answer, which allowed Brook to move on to win Miss USA and later give her country a Miss Universe crown!
Whether Brook Lee’s view in 1997 aligned with your opinion of Marijuana, she articulated her rationale spontaneously, confidently and beautifully with a great personable touch. Philippines was asked a similar question at MU2018 and had a clearly inferior answer, even though this question had frankly been asked a few other times between 1997 and 2018. The standards of MU contestants answering questions appear to have dropped over the years, although Zozibini Tunzi kind of salvaged things in 2019, probably one of the most articulate public speakers at MU ever in its history.

Hawaii and Idaho were the only ones who answered satisfyingly in my opinion. The others either went around in circles or delivered their answers less sincerely.
Tennessee had a good answer but went on in circles.

Great job by all of them, and refreshing questions. However, judges (and fans) must remember that the judging and scoring must be not solely on the answer but of overall impression and performance. They must keep in mind, who would be the best candidate to be Miss….whatever pageant. This year Miss USA 1997 was an example of most of the panel scoring only the answer. They forgot about what to consider. If they weren't ignorant or forgetful and judged correctly, perhaps Tennessee and even Hawaii wouldn't have made top 3. Florida would have, and should have advanced.
Hawai’i had the best Q&A. Her answer was personal, humble and anyone can relate. No wonder she won.
