Best pageant broadcast under the weather circumstances, when Dick Clark died they referred to a clip from this show.
Jamie Solinger won this one but then she would be unplaced at Miss USA 1998 while Kansas (Danielle Boatwright) and Rhode Island (Shanna Moakler) would both place as 1st runner up at Miss USA 1996 and 1995 respectively. Shanna would also inherit the Miss USA title after Chelsi Smith won Miss Universe. Interesting.

In the judge's questions, I believe Alabama should have placed above Kansas. Â There was something about Kansas which I didn't quite like, a kind of arrogance. Â Iowa was perfect, the perfect teenager and Oklahoma wasn't far behind either. Â Both exuded class and perfect teen role models.

I heard that they filmed two versions of the crowning to keep people in suspense. They crowned Iowa then also crowned Oklahoma; they then showed Iowa's crowning as the rightful winner on the night of the telecast. Supposedly they showed Iowa and Oklahoma actually watching the telecast and that's how they found out who actually won. Is there any truth to this or is this a myth?
