On September 6, 1949 my grandparents travelled to Atlantic City to see the Miss America Pageant Parade. My grandfather loved his 8mm movie camera and he took it along. The resulting film has since been passed on to me (his grandson) and I was thrilled to be able to digitize it along with all of our 8mm family films. Included was this gem, in COLOR no less! While researching exactly what year this film was shot, I watched many other similar films, all in black and white. This is the only one I’ve seen in color!
I can confirm that this is 1949. Twice during this video, you’ll see a booth with tickets for sale. The date on the stand is listed as Tuesday, Sept 6. Going through old calendars, there aren’t as many occurrences of Sept 6 on a Tuesday as you’d think. That helped narrow down to three dates. I then compared the floats in my video to several others which confirmed the year.
At the start, end and a few more times, you’ll see my grandmother. My grandfather was behind the camera and unfortunately can’t be seen.
I admit that I had a bit of fun with the opening and closing title/credits and hope that you get a kick out of them. Ironically, they look worse (on purpose) than the actual video from over 72 years ago.
Enjoy!
