Beauty Pageants in the Philippines

Unless you’ve been living in a hole for the last 20 years, you’ve seen that the Philippines has dominated the international beauty pageant market. From Gloria Diaz, Pia Wurtzbach, John Raspado, Catriona Grey, and many others, the Philippines has had major representation at every international contest for decades.

In the four major beauty pageant contests: Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Earth, and Miss International, the Philippines has placed 100 times and won 15 times.

The first recorded beauty pageant in the Philippines was in 1908 at the Manila carnival. The winner won the title of “Carnival Queen” and this pageant continued until 1938.

Today, women from all over the Philippines compete for the coveted title of Binibining Pilipinas, which is the national beauty pageant of the Philippines. They select who competes in the big four International beauty pageants mentioned above.

Today, nearly every Barangay (a Filipino small town or district) in the Philippines has some sort of “Beaucon” (beauty contest).

While I was living in the Philippines, we would be amazed at the amount of pageantry, preparation, and pride that come from the local and national beauty pageants.
