Betty Cantrell Crowned Miss America 2016: A New Standard of Excellence

On September 13, 2015, the stage was set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, for a momentous occasion as Betty Cantrell, representing Georgia, was crowned Miss America 2016. The annual pageant, known for its blend of talent, scholarship, and social impact, celebrated not just beauty but the intelligence, ambition, and resolve of its contestants.

A Journey to the Crown

Betty Cantrell, a native of Warner Robins, Georgia, brought with her a unique background and a passion for music. A graduate of Mercer University, where she studied Vocal Performance and Music Education, Cantrell showcased her incredible vocal talent during the pageant, performing a stunning rendition of “Tu Tu Piccolo I’Fior” from the opera “L’Elisir d’Amore.” Her performance dazzled the judges and set her apart from a fierce competition of 52 talented young women.

The Importance of Advocacy

Beyond her musical talents, Cantrell stood out for her commitment to social issues. As Miss America, she advocated for a cause close to her heart: the importance of healthy eating and nutrition. Her platform, “Healthy Children, Strong America,” aimed to tackle childhood obesity and promote wellness among youth. Her advocacy resonated with audiences and highlighted the pageant’s evolving mission to focus on social relevance rather than merely external beauty.

Embracing the Role

Upon receiving the crown, Cantrell expressed her gratitude and determination to utilize her newfound platform effectively. In her first public address as Miss America, she emphasized the importance of using her voice to inspire change and connect with communities across the nation. She actively participated in various outreach programs and initiatives, working with children and families to promote healthy lifestyles.
