  1. She was one of the very few Miss America winners who got the title her first time out…meaning she didn't have multiple tries at winning her state crown.

  2. Possibly the overall BEST Miss America competitor ever! Known for having won every Preliminary Award she competed for…at every level…local, state and MAO!

  3. She was an amazing, inspiring, soloist in our high school church choir in the 70's and we all knew she had a rare gift, in addition to being so humble and kind. I am even more awestruck by the beauty and clarity of her voice now which sounds straight from heaven. I am so glad she was Miss America so more people could hear her sing. She is a National Treasure and one of the best we have ever had.  Judy Hunt Streed

  4. There will come a time when you ask "who, not what are our National Treasures?"I'm sure Dorothy Benham will feature in the nominations. Thank you so much for this post.  Her performance of "Bless this House" in the Hour of Power  is outstanding.

  5. …….Great performing ability too. Its nice when you can understand every word a soprano is singing and they possess this much personality!!!!

  6. @TheSavannahroberts why not just say Bb…or is that perfect pitch kicking in again…kidding she hit a High D in Altisimi (sp…above treble clef)

  7. I was in choir with Dorothy in high school. She was, of course, the soprano soloist, and whenever she sang, it was difficult for the rest of us to continue singing–we all just wanted to stop and listen to her. When she sang Ave Maria, we'd all compare goosebumps on our arms. Between her talent, kindness, beauty, and inner beauty, she was well deserving of the Miss America title.

  8. @VTMCompany I think it's just a High D. And yes, her note is higher than the air horn which was an A sharp below High C. 🙂
