Edit:
Text version here:

This gunlance guide seeks to teach the main basic mechanism of the weapon just as you start playing it when you begin a new game or try it on the demo.

This means, stuck with a normal shell type without a single active skill and using Hail Cutter, Charged shells and Quick Reload as your Switch Skill.

I’m preparing to upload the whole write down of the guide online to be checked offline.

I will sticky it on the comments.

As a final note, all this is based on the monster hunter rise magnamalo demo. Some things could change in the release but is already confirmed that you start with this load out.

I focus on solo gunlance but also give some notes to play on gunlance in multiplayer.

And be ready to learn gunlance from zero!

  1. I mostly skipped Gunlances in MHW because the best wide gunlance was locked behind Kulve RNG, and I never got it… and the next best one was a big step down… this was before Iceborne

  2. When you say a gunlance main may never learn a new weapon….. It's true. I've tried multiple new games trying to play any other weapon in world /iceborne. But always without fail come back to the boom stick…..
Was this video just for me :O

  3. Gunlance combos are always fun to learn and use.
Landing those Wyrmstakes will be sooo satisfying.
I have high hopes for Wide Wyrmstake and the KO potential!

  4. Instead of using charged backsteps, I find that just doing normal backhops and then replacing the last hop with a running-upswing is also a somewhat easy way to resposition with the gunlance while your weapon is out. The running upswing moves very similarly to a backhop but lets you turn a full 180 degrees around while also setting you up to do a downslam fullburst. Getting the spacing right for a fullburst is a bit tricky to pull off at first, but with enough time you can start hopping around in reverse like you're playing regular lance. That said, this is a trick I used in world/iceborne and I am not really sure how practical it is in rise given wirebugs is another shortcut for movement.

  5. It saddens me because even tho this video is very good and got me hyped even more about gunlance, ill wait the PC release even tho I have a switch.

It hurts but waiting to play it not a 30 fps is gonna be worth it. That being said have fun yall.

  6. Picked up MHGU while waiting for rise and got in the bad habbit of quick reload guard pointing. I find myself getting smacked cuz I forget you cant do it in this game lol

  7. Did I miss it or did you not say that guard edge can go into a fast wyrmstake? Also, pauses are important, especially when there are 2 information sources at once, the text and the voice. Other than that it's a solid fundation for newer players, but the problem I mentioned before still stands.

  8. Blast dash is awesome but damn, I don't want to say goodbye to my quick wyrmstakes. They're just too good, if BD can't combo into wyrmstake, I won't find it viable (unless it has something REALLY good to compensate). Especially with the stun that wide stake has now.

  9. World made me fall in love with the gunlance when I suddenly skewered a Great Jagras with an exploding stake way back. Seeing the wyrmstake get much more focus in Rise makes me VERY happy.

  10. Currently using Magnamalo as training wheels because I haven't played the demo in so long. Getting my ass handed to me from guarding and forgetting some of the new moves, but I'm working through it.

That said, I'm worried if my switch controls are functioning properly. When I try to run up a wall, my character goes left. Don't know if that's the game being sensitive or my controls being a year old without much use.
