The propensity for contestants from particular countries or regions, or for people with certain physical attributes, to perform better than others would appear to be the case in most, if not all, international competitions.

This was brought to light recently with the crowning of Iván Álvarez of Spain as Mister Supranational 2023, continuing a pattern of muscled, olive-skinned and bearded men that have won the title.

It reignited discussion about the tendency for pageants to have a ‘type’, and indeed whether or not this is fair. Check out my video which addresses this very topic!

  1. In 2013, Mr Lebanon, Ayman Soussa, went unplaced at Mr World. To this day, I still think he's a perfect specimen of a gorgeaus young man. But he never fit the "Mr" mould/type. He had a full beard, a hairy body, slightly balding and a lot of bulk. Check him out!

  2. Yes…Pageants should have a type , I feel " blueprint " 🙂 would be a better word.

Results should be based/honed int9 that – more like a background.

The results so happened that the winners had similar features….nevertheless I felt they won..because they performed well..

Again..yes..Pageants should have a." Type "….otherwise will be having a zoo of participants

  3. To me meritocracy over political correctness! ALWAYS!!! The future will tell, race or nationality is and will remain a social construct and will gradually lose its relevance. I would rather chose all deserving blonds each and every year than crown a mediocre minority rep just to appease and please the public who is dying to see diversity. I don't care if you are yellow, black or green, as long as you are the best candidate then you deserve the crown.

  4. The truth is that male beauty pageants are still on a long way to evolve. The cookie cutter pattern offends me because the message is that only that type represents masculinity forgetting that there are other types of men that could be a messenger. Also, these male pageants don't transmit their purposes of existence. What message do they want to transmit?

  5. Mister supranational is a new pageant!! When you guys go when it comes to Miss International who have never crowded an African or South Asian country!!! 🤧

  6. for me as a filipino i felt their worth…its okay that Ecuador won along with Philippines…lets just give others some chance…since Philippines achieves so many crowns minor or major knowing that Philippines is a pageant loving country❤❤❤❤

  7. Roger this is a very good pageant panel topic though I am starting to feel many national and international pageants are becoming accepting of diversity but I do feel skin color is an issue in certain countries that do not show the true diversity in skin color that exist in those countries. We should not crown someone to fit a quota but we also should not deny giving a deserving winner a title because they don't fit a particular beauty preference. As a person of color, I can see beauty in all shades.

  8. I think each of the judges in the panel could also affect the course of final result considering his or her own impression of the contestant's overall performance.

  9. I remember hearing that, in 1970, Life magazine ran pictures of the last 10 Miss Americas and all looked alike, or appeared to be the same type. Perhaps this was especially true if they started with Lynda Lee Mead and didn’t end with Pam Eldred, who was blonde. In 1978, when Kylene Barker won Miss Virginia, a local critic wrote a column on how unusual it was for a blonde to win in the Miss America system, even if this was just two years after Dorothy Benham won.

  10. Roger, it looks like Miss World is more progressive in making pageant relative than Miss Universe. And it seems that Miss Universe is lagging behind MW in terms of relevancy, change and diversity. It looks MU is just noise and mere glam.

  11. If Supra has a certain type of a make prototypes then I would urge my country South Africa not to send a black candidate because majority of us are of Khoisan background and we are not tall and full bearded. I would urge Asia not to send delegates because it means we are not the standard male prototypes. I would also urge Mr Supra to detail their prototype on paper so that it can be clear

  12. Well done. I usually do the same thing for all pageants; I Only judge them during prelims.

I do agree with Mister Supranational Winners. They do have the type. When I see the final 2 this year, I knew 🇪🇸Spain will win. Brazil has the most top 5 finishers in history.

English is an international business language. Since Pageantry is a job interview, each Titleholder need to be a brand ambassador not only to the organisation but their sponsors as well.

  13. I've always wondered how do the straight male juries in women's pageants (as well as straight women and gay men juries in male pageants) in the different pageants balance out trying to find out who throughout the process and/or in the night of the main competition is the right person for the title while not getting tempted to favour the men/women they would personally be most attracted to.

  14. People seem to forget that the main PURPOSE of pageants is To SELL. Organizers want to court sponsors' endorsement contracts, public appearances, etc.
The Alphas have more leeway to deviate from standard beauty norms because of the strength of their brands. However Supra is still establishing itself and for now at least, will go for the obviously commercial choice.

  15. The same thing could be said for female pageants. There's a reason why there’s never been a fat Miss Universe. I think it's normal to be held to a certain type of standard when it comes to pageantry. These are beauty pageants after all and part of being beautiful is having a good body female or male. It shows dedication and consistency towards a healthy lifestyle which is important for being a global ambassador. It's not enough to be smart and have a good personality. The majority of people in life have these qualities. What sets these pageant contestants apart from normal every day people is having those qualities as well as being beautiful and having an amazing body. We want to see the best of the best competing and winning. What's the point in rewarding mediocracy? I think Asia and The America's do so well in pageantry because countries from these regions treat pageantry like professional sports. The opportunities given to successful pageant girls are huge and they have big budgets and teams to turn anyone into a star. That's why they continue to win. I don't think these pageants have a type as such I feel that countries like Philippines, Venezuela and South Africa produce a lot of winners because the spend more time, money and effort creating future pageant kings and queens.

  16. 7:22 Miss Earth's first ever winner was from Denmark…. and I do not know if this accounts for both European and African winner but in Miss Earth 2002, the original winner was in fact a European woman– from Bosnia and Herzegovina but was later dethroned and replaced by Miss Kenya. So far, in Miss Earth's history, BOSHRZ and DEN have remained the only two women who won the title. However, if we discount BOSHRZ, then this makes Denmark the only European woman to ever win ME.

  17. About transgender men: Mister International declared after their 2019 editions conclusion that "they too will accept transgender men" in the name of diversity and acceptance since Miss Universe has started accepting TGWs since 2012 but had its first -ever TGW contestant in 2018. So far no TGM has competed in Mr. Intl. and we have yet to see one in the next editions.

  18. I can admit about next video: Several countries who win the crown but did not have more placements? – Example being Honduras went to win Miss Earth 2003 as the country first major international pageant of any kind and later in 2015 another Honduran placement take place as 1st Runner-Up in Miss International – Will you have ever see it?
