If the judges and the producers didn't know who ranked how until Bert Parks read the results, how was it that from Left to Right, they just happened to be sitting 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5?
Iβm 67 now. STILL bugs me that crown fell off! I meanβ¦come onβ¦take a minuteβ¦
There was a LOT of Heavy-Duty AquaNet in that room.

Both Phyllis & Claudia (1st runner up) have passed away.
Now Miss America wont be on tv. Will be streamed.
Do you mean to tell me that in 1971, with all the bobbie pins and Aqua Net that had to be there, they couldn't get that crown to stay put?
Lee Merriweather was very beautiful.
I remember as a kid watching this, my first Miss America pageant. I have remembered Phyllis George since. I don't remember, however, Bert Parks being such a pretentious poseur, though. π

You don't just sit a crown on someone's head! Secure it down!!!!!

It's difficult to fathom that the dimpled one from Texas, Phyllis George, is no longer with us. May she R.I.P. Thank you, lovely one, for being Miss America 1971 and taking your beauty and announcing skills to The NFL Today pre-game show, as well as being a spokesperson for a number of products. You will be sorely missed by all of your fans around the world. My condolences to the George family for the loss of their loved one.
Beauty, Brains and Talent…She had it all. The Ultimate Miss America of all-time.

She was very beautiful and represented Denton Texas well. We were proud having resided in Denton and attended then North Texas State University and Texas Womanβs University. Rest in Heaven Phyllis
Watching as a young 11 year old from Claudia Turner's hometown of Spartanburg, SC we were all rooting so hard for her to win that night. It was a big disappointment when Bert Parks read the results, but Phyllis was so deserving as well. It is hard to believe she passed this week.
Rest In Peace Phyllis. You were so beautiful.
came to honor former First Lady of Kentucky Phyllis George
She was crowned the year I was born in Tx, 1971.
She would go on to be the first woman to host a sports show. Co-hosting the brand new NFL Today in 1975. In the process she paved the way for women to follow in her footsteps. Now, nearly 50 years later we are not so happy. π RIP Phyllis George
Will all will be missed Thank you Phyllis George.
