Based on the true story of Carolyn Sapp, a Miss America pageant winner, this is a behind-the-scenes look not only at the goings-on of the pageant but also at the abusive relationship between Miss Sapp and her boyfriend which led her to request police protection from him. This movie’s story is told well. While yes, her boyfriend, Nuu Faaola was wrong for what he did, she did not depict him as this horrible person but rather someone who needed help to heal from his past which lead him to have anger management problems as an adult. I did not end up hating Mr. Faaola, but rather had some empathy for his situation. However, Miss Sapp’s overall message in this film is that while Miss Sapp could forgive Faaola for his behavior, she could not forget it nor trust him anymore.
