The Philippines, the country where I was born, is contrived with deep-rooted colonial mentality, which is convoluting the wide spectrum of “social norms” including beauty… But the more educated , travelled, and cultured a Filipino becomes the more the same Filipino becomes more at ease with that innate sense of identity and nationalism!!! Three hundred thirty three years of Spanish regime, over 50 years (I think) of American rule, a couple of decades of Japanese intervention, a lifelong Chines influence, and everything in between emanating from massive Filipino diaspora… Filipinos are not comfortable in their own skin, literally and figuratively… See, skin whitening and rhinoplasty is an industry in this Developing (aka Third World) country…

We have a westernized standard of beauty and we look at Caucasians with blue eyes, long blond hair like a Barbie Doll as beautiful. Our native natural beauty is considered 'common' 'regular' or 'usual' and this kind of beauty with morena (tanned brunette) skin is the one that ended up with foreign partners from other countries like the US of A. We have to use whitening products available in the market for us to look attractive to others.
