Miss Texas R’Bonney Gabriel made history last year as the first Filipina American to be crowned Miss USA. Gabriel, a 28-year-old fashion designer of San Antonio, Texas, will go on to represent the U.S. this year at the Miss Universe pageant. Gabriel said she designed her dress to pay tribute to her heritage and parents.
“Oh my God, it’s an honor,” Gabriel told Houston Life following her win. “I’m getting messages on Instagram and just social media of Filipina girls and women telling me they’re so excited, they’re so happy.” She joined another Filipino American woman, Averie Bishop from Dallas, in represented the state of Texas in the most esteemed pageants. Bishop competed for the title of Miss America in December.Gabriel graduated from the University of North Texas in 2018 and has her own independent clothing label out of the Houston area””They’re crying tears of joy because they are inspired to go after pageantry or something,” she added. “Like I’m paving the way for them to just go after whatever they want no matter what it is.   1. The bottom line is R'bonney is still a Filipina at heart but it was U.S. that she is representing like Catriona Grey a Fil-Australian lineage just like R'bonney a Fil-American. Half- half. So it is still Philippines who's in the forefront, kudos to her parents.
