The Miss Universe Beauty Pageant has been going on for 67 years and over time, it has changed dramatically. By tracing its history and taking a closer look at it’s evolution, we can see dramatic developments on how societies perception of beauty and changed and ultimately, progressed. Today we’ll be looking at the roots of the organization and how everything started. From there, we’ll go over the rules Miss Universe contestants need to follow in order to participate in the competition. That way, you’ll know what they’re getting into and how things have changed over time. One big change, for instance, is that in the beginning the competition was exclusively about the bathing suit contest and the evening gown contest. It is clear that over the years, the women are being more valued for what’s in their heads, instead of what’s outside of it.

While it’s interesting to take note of these developments, we will be focusing on diving deep into history of racial representation in the show. For the first six years of the pageant, white women were the sole winners of the crown. It wasn’t until 1957 that the first Latin American woman, Gladys Zender of Peru, won Miss Universe and things started changing. Now, in 2019, South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi is making news being the first black woman to take home the crown since 2011. We will be covering how she spoke out on representation on how women shouldn’t be boxed into one type of beauty.

While in the beginning, the competition had a narrow concept of what beauty was, now we have seen it develop into an organization that celebrates diversity in the form of women of all cultures and backgrounds. We are excited to see how it will continue to evolve in years to come.

  1. Oxana wasn't fired, she gave it up because of all the insulting interviews and she was trying to protect herself as an individual. The Miss Universe(when Trump owned it) did not take care of her, so shut up Trump! 5:15

  2. Another rule should be that they contested must be 100% women . We are celebrating women view in all aspects, beuty, intelecto, esponteli, porte, versatility, good manner, body figure, ect

  3. Am i right, it is the winner of Miss America who refuse to wear the Catalina swimwear and not Miss Universe? Talko might have got it wrong?

  4. Though I’m not too keen on beauty pageants in general, I do believe in diverse beauty and inclusivity. As the saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.
