The Miss Universe Problem: An Examination of Beauty Standards and Cultural Representation
The Miss Universe pageant, one of the most prestigious beauty contests globally, has long been a subject of fascination, debate, and controversy. Beyond the glitz and glamour, it presents an intriguing dilemma often referred to as “The Miss Universe Problem.” This term encapsulates the broader social implications of beauty standards, cultural representation, and the evolving notions of femininity that the competition grapples with.
A Brief History
Founded in 1952, the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) originally aimed to promote feminine beauty and poise. Over the decades, it garnered massive popularity, attracting millions of viewers and participants from numerous countries. Contestants are judged on various criteria, including evening wear, swimwear, talent, and the famed question-and-answer round, where their social awareness and intelligence come into play.
The Paradox of Beauty
“The Miss Universe Problem” begins with the paradox of the contest’s name: how can beauty be universally defined when it is inherently subjective and culturally specific? What is deemed beautiful varies across different cultures, time periods, and individual perspectives. The pageant often showcases a particular Western-centric standard of beauty, characterized by specific body types, skin tones, and facial features, which may not reflect the diversity of womanhood globally.
This standardization raises questions about representation. While Miss Universe has made strides in inclusivity by allowing contestants from various backgrounds, critics argue that the overall framework still upholds narrow definitions of beauty. As a result, many women, particularly those from marginalized groups, may feel alienated or underrepresented.
Cultural Representation and Diversity
In recent years, there has been a conscious effort within the Miss Universe Organization to spotlight diversity. The inclusion of contestants from various cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous representatives and women of different sizes and abilities, indicates progress. However, this effort is often met with skepticism, as viewers and critics question whether the integration of diversity is superficial or genuine.
Moreover, the competitive nature of the pageant can sometimes reinforce a hierarchical view of beauty, where only certain traits are celebrated over others. The expectation for contestants to adhere to specific beauty norms, whether through makeup, fashion choices, or even physical fitness, can further complicate their representation and lead to a paradoxical message of empowerment versus conformity.
Evolving Feminine Identity
Another dimension of “The Miss Universe Problem” lies in the evolving concept of femininity. As more women demand agency over their identities, the pageant’s traditional values are being called into question. Feminism and body positivity movements challenge the premise that a woman’s worth is tied to her appearance. Contestants are increasingly advocating for social issues, using their platforms to promote causes like education, mental health, and gender equality.
This shift presents a dual challenge: how can the pageant both celebrate beauty and empower women to go beyond superficial standards? Audience reception tends to fluctuate, with some viewers praising contestants who engage in social issues while others remain focused solely on physical beauty.
The Future of Miss Universe
As “The Miss Universe Problem” continues to unfold, the organization stands at a crossroads. The challenge will be to redefine beauty in a way that is inclusive and reflective of a global audience. This requires confronting deep-seated cultural biases while promoting narratives that uplift all women, regardless of their backgrounds.
The ongoing dialogue surrounding the Miss Universe pageant highlights the societal evolution around beauty and femininity. The potential for change lies not only within the contest itself but also in how society as a whole defines and celebrates women in all their diversity.
Conclusion
“The Miss Universe Problem” is more than just a critique of a beauty pageant; it is a mirror reflecting larger societal issues regarding beauty, identity, and empowerment. As the world embraces an increasingly diverse narrative, events like Miss Universe must adapt and evolve, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of beauty and celebrating women holistically. The future promises an opportunity for greater inclusivity and deeper conversations about what it truly means to be beautiful in today’s interconnected world.

Miss Mexico for miss Universe FR FR!! -🇵🇭
Wait…WAIT. You're saying a contest based on women's looks has a misogyny problem? Feigned shock
The fact that all the contestants did not walk out and the competition continued is why I no longer belief in girl power and women helping women. The women in that room are their own worse enemy. All women should have walked out and the contest should not have been able to continue. No respect for miss universe
You're telling me that a a beauty pageant that judges women on their employees is run by a guy treatment. Shocking
I thought we stopped doing this
… nah imma just hit the gas 🏎💨

Miss HUACHICOL
All he wanted was a sandwich!!!
What a p.o.s. obviously on a power trip.No person should be talked to in that manner. Absolutely a tyrant
This is why these things should not be done in a 3rd world country.
This is not out of the ordinary for a lot of parts of Asia. The stereotype of a boss tearing into their subordinates, regardless of gender, and the expectation that they will shut their mouth and just take it is a cultural norm in many places in Asia. I’m not saying every boss in Asia does this but it’s not uncommon. He does it because he’s an asshole but also because this is how people he watched as he was coming up demand respect and it’s been done to him. Not an excuse, he’s still a dick.
the man is a closet gay and jealous of the women's beauty
no — you got be the guy who respects women — whether you can 'read the room' or not
"Lemme just hit the gas" xDD
I was so invested I didnt even notice the reel ended
Me in the face of adversity: "Imma just hit the gas!"
“Like I always say”
“I’ve never said this in my life”
Never change man 😂
Are you really worried about this sham contest? You're pathetic.
First, just because these women are beautiful and in pageants does NOT make them dumb or weak. Second, Imma need these type of arrogant, abusive men to take seats because they forget a woman is the reason they even exist. STFU!!
I’m Latino. And I’m telling you. Do not try it with Latina women.
One measly man trying to do this to an entire room of empowered women is insane. What did he expect? These women live to preach feminism and equality, they can and will handle their business. Dude was so out of place
He even said she has a gun and he needs security to come and some other stuff as well and not only that, this is not the first time he treated a miss universe contestant badly (last year it was india and i dont doubt hes an everyday misogynistic pos towards regular women too with no cameras, witnesses or a language barrier)
Shows us how other countries treat their women
Everyone fell for that farce, Miss Universo has had low ratings for many years and they set all this up so people would talk about them again, but think about it, why would there be cameras and lights in a conference room when he called them in to scold them, why would he let someone record him so closely and in such an obvious way…
Dude thought he was in a "Fast and Furious" movie with how hard he was hitting the gas.
“Nah ima just hit the gas”😂😂😂😂
Love your story telling style
nah, imma just hit the gas
And they wonder why Thailand is getting hit with earthquakes🥴😡
Great narration I heard a little about this but now I think I understand it in a nutshell
HELL NAH! I woulda BOUNCED and thrown down that sash. Boy please! Talking to them like that?? Ha! Yeah right Nawat.
