They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As far as humans go, nothing could be more true. People are obsessed with looks and it is one of the things that seems to dominate our world and daily lives. From television and movie stars to billboard models and even some of our toys, beautiful people, and beauty in general, has become an integral part of life. We tend to gravitate towards things which are pleasing to the eye, whether it be a beautiful flower, a masterpiece of artwork or a curvy and sexy automobile. It is true that everybody has different tastes and everybody rates beauty differently. Ultimately, this never prevents us from ranking things of beauty as we try to quantify this characteristic.
Perhaps one of the best known methods of ranking beauty is the beauty pageant. Such competitions which rank women based on beauty date back as far as the 1800s. Over time various pageants came and went with the Miss America Pageant, started in 1921, remaining as the oldest ongoing competition in the world. Over time, as interest in such events increased the Miss World and Miss Universe contests came about. The development of the bikini and the expansion of television coverage in the mid-20th century only helped to make such competitions more popular. These larger, and more famous pageants, naturally led to smaller spin-off pageants which can be found all across the world as women from various regions, provinces and countries vie with one another for the title of pageant Queen.
Of course, these traditional pageants are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to beauty contests. Over the last 100 years, there has been a constant stream of less conventional competitions, usually but not always involving women, which rank beauty for the sake of advertising or spreading a message. Various industries, special interest groups and businesses often try their hand at a beauty pageant in order to stir up interest and draw attention from potential consumers. Whether a power company, the farm industry or a chain of restaurants, the beauty pageant has been used as a way to attract attention and money using the looks of contestants.
Then there are the really strange beauty pageants which occur across the globe. Most of these are events many of us have never heard of, but they do exist. Such unconventional pageants show that we love ranking beauty and we’re more than happy to judge anyone and anything. From the 1930s all the way to today, you’ll see that there is literally a pageant for everything when it comes to beauty. From animals and toys to military personnel and sci-fi characters, beauty definitely is in the eye of the beholder. 5:09 is a RACOON not a SKUNK. While both can make lovely exotic pets, this lil guy is at the wrong pageant. We in the UK are allowed to own both without a permit, but must make sure they are one UK captive bred and two they must be kept secure to avoid introducing an alien species. Skunks DO NOT have their stink gland removed as it's classed as mutilation like dog tail docking (with exemptions for some working dogs). No they do not spray unless hurt or seriously frightened, I've held one, I got no eu de skunk 🙂
