Did you know that the Vatican condemned the Italian feature La Dolce Vita for its exuberant views of Swedish actress Anita Ekberg’s cleavage and that she was hired on the spot for the feature by famed filmmaker Federico Fellini? Anita Ekberg was born in Sweden in 1931 and was inspired to take part in local beauty pageants during her young adulthood. The future star’s success in these pageants paved the way for her to compete in the Miss Universe pageant in 1951. Though she didn’t win, she was offered a chance during the competition to sign a contract with Universal Studios, bringing her to Hollywood.

Sadly, Universal Studios didn’t end up figuring out what to do with Anita Ekberg. They let go of the actress after only a couple of months, though success would end up finding the actress later on thanks to her appearance alongside Bob Hope in a string of USO shows. Marilyn Monroe had been meant to appear in the shows, and Anita proved a fitting replacement. John Wayne’s production company subsequently swept up the star, and it was during the filming of a picture with John Wayne that Anita first got a taste of life in Rome. The actress fell in love with Italy, and she ended up spending the majority of her remaining life there.
