The stage lights, glittering gowns, and perfect smiles are what most people see when they watch the Miss Teen USA pageant. But beyond the spotlight lies a world full of dedication, hard work, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments that shape the lives of the young women competing. Behind the scenes at Miss Teen USA, the magic is just as real as it is on stage—only it involves a lot more hairspray, hustle, and heart.
The Journey Begins
For many of the contestants, the Miss Teen USA experience begins long before they step foot on the national stage. Preparation can take months—even years—and often includes walking lessons, interview coaching, fitness training, and community service. Contestants are not only judged on their beauty and grace but also on their poise, intelligence, and personal accomplishments.
These young women represent their states with pride and have often won local and state-level titles before earning the chance to compete at the national level. Many are active in their schools, volunteer in their communities, and pursue causes they are passionate about. The pageant offers them a national platform to share those passions and make a difference. ownthatcrown.com
Backstage Vibes: The Real Sisterhood
Once the contestants arrive at the host city, the energy is electric. Backstage, the atmosphere is a blend of excitement, nerves, and genuine connection. Contrary to the stereotype of pageants being competitive and cutthroat, many contestants describe the experience as surprisingly supportive and uplifting.
Girls bond over shared experiences, help zip each other into dresses, swap makeup tips, and cheer each other on before interviews or onstage appearances. Many lifelong friendships are formed in those makeup chairs and hotel hallways. The camaraderie behind the scenes is one of the most cherished aspects of Miss Teen USA.
The Glam Behind the Glamour
Creating the flawless looks seen on stage is no easy feat. Behind the scenes, a team of stylists, makeup artists, and wardrobe coordinators work tirelessly to make sure every contestant looks and feels their best. But the girls are far from passive participants—most bring their own sense of style and spend hours perfecting their hair, makeup, and wardrobe choices.
Rehearsals take up a significant part of the schedule. Contestants practice walking, poses, group choreography, and stage cues multiple times a day. It’s physically demanding and mentally taxing, but the contestants power through, fueled by adrenaline, ambition, and support from one another.
Interview Prep and Confidence Building
The interview portion of the competition is one of the most nerve-wracking elements for many contestants. But it’s also one of the most rewarding. Behind closed doors, the girls get the opportunity to speak from the heart about their passions, goals, and views on important topics.
Many contestants spend weeks preparing for this moment, practicing with mentors or coaches and staying up to date on current events. It’s not just about memorizing answers—it’s about learning to express yourself confidently and authentically.
These skills often carry over into their personal and professional lives long after the pageant is over. For many, Miss Teen USA is the first stepping stone toward careers in public speaking, entertainment, entrepreneurship, or activism.
Heartfelt Moments and Hidden Challenges
The behind-the-scenes experience isn’t all glitz and glamour. There are moments of exhaustion, homesickness, and pressure. Contestants miss their families, deal with sore feet from long rehearsals, and sometimes question whether they’re good enough.
But it’s in those quiet, honest moments that the true spirit of Miss Teen USA shines. Contestants comfort one another, share encouraging words, and build each other up. Pageant staff and volunteers often act as mentors and emotional anchors throughout the process, creating a warm and safe environment for everyone involved.
More Than a Crown
At the end of the competition, only one contestant takes home the title of Miss Teen USA. But behind the scenes, every girl walks away with something far more valuable—confidence, experience, friendships, and a sense of accomplishment.
Miss Teen USA is more than just a beauty pageant; it’s a celebration of young women who are passionate, talented, and driven to make a difference. The real story lies behind the curtain—in the late-night conversations, group laughter, team spirit, and personal growth.
So the next time you watch the crowning moment, remember: the true beauty of Miss Teen USA isn’t just in the final walk. It’s in every step of the journey behind the scenes. ownthatcrown.com

man its funny how ignorant people are of things, especially of their own past.
jacqulineparker , hispanic isnt a race, it just means you come from a spanish speaking nation. There can be black hispanics and white hispanics.
those Panamanian women that "look" black ARE black, they have African Ancestry, they are black hispanics.
and u will never ever
omg! one of my friends, jeni dixon, was there! I miss her!
I know the girl with the orange hair shes my really good friend:]
this girl is GORGEOUS. wow. beautiful.
why does this always have to be about race? who gives a fuck! CHILL.
and also panamanian women look black but are hispanic like me
there is such a thing as black hispanics. She's from Rhode Island and everyone knows that there are many Afro Latinos that come from all over Latin America and the Caribbean, especially from places like the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and Cuba.
I met some of the girls while I was on vacation down there, VERY sweet and cool ladies! 🙂
We'll, if u have a problem with Non-whites, then I suggest u move out of this country or u gonna gets the beat down lol 😛 So dont be surprised when u see someone beautiful that isnt white.
omg some of u ppl are being so racist. first off shes latina, her last name is "martinez", just because she has brown skin doesn't make her african american. & second there isn't a standard image of beauty. i think shes really pretty (no homo) so ppl really need to stop hating. & to that dumb bxtch "beveryhlls" watever the fcuk the rest is, shes not biracial and trust me ppl arent trying to be like u..maybe ppl love each other regardless of race so they have kids..ure def a loser 4 thinkin dat.
Yeah rhode island!
She's not full black & she's not ugly. She's pretty. Her last name is definately latino.
I want to be in one of these things but i dk how to get sponsorers or my parents wouldn't really drive me out to the thing lol.
Im sorry maybe i read this wrong…but are you saying because she has color on her skin she cant be beautiful….sounds like you are just hating on her…cause any person in the right mind can tell you that she IS beautifu
It is not about she is black or white. Most girls and women think beauty queens are not that beautiful (except for those ones who are the same genre as they are themselves; for example, myself, being a petite and fragile girl, like Kate Moss, who is a similar type). This industry is full of jealousy and rivalry. I do admit I'm jealous of beauty queens. As for my own pageant experiences, you can read them in my blog.
thats cool. i remember doing pageants. kinda the same. i miss it.
totally!
Congrats Stevi..
On the big win!!
