They’re six of the biggest international beauty pageants around today, so what does each of them look for when selecting their queen? The third and final episode of my series, The Big 6 Showdown, takes a look at each pageant – Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Earth, Miss Supranational and Miss Grand International – to highlight their unique qualities. What they’re loved for, even what they’re criticised for.

I also look at some of the more critical factors that influence a delegate or indeed an entire nation’s chances of success in these pageants.

Once again, I’m not using “The Big 6” in any way that demeans any other so-called grouping of pageants. However, if you personally have an issue with this, and believe that it’s only the “Big 4” that exists, then please go and watch something else. I’ve explained my reasons more times than I should have needed to 🙂

  1. Would you PLEASE WATCH Ms World 1973, Marjorie Wallace from USA , dethroned, Ms Philippines 1st runner up. Seek your opinion why Philippines didn't get the crown. Injustice??

  2. 7:30 some Indonesians fans bashed the new titleholder , and kept questionning the results… ofc that's irritating . The director has a reason to be upset . But professionnally ,he was indeed in the wrong .

  3. I really admire and appreciate your hardwork in creating these informative videos about beauty pageants which helps me more to understand their significance and their existence. Keep en coming!

  4. Miss grand international 2018… they robbed India.. she's the real winner.. and those highlighted Indian crowned girls are everything.. they truly deserves those crowns👑❤

  5. Another awesome video! Everything is well-researched and your opinions, thoughts, and ideas are all impartial and objective. This is definitely one of my favorite channels!

In this list, my top favorites are Miss Universe and Miss Earth because of their right balance of excitement, glamour, and substance. And these two pageants have an accounting firm that tabulates judges' scores which means there's fairness in the judging.

  6. It’s so nerdy, so academic and I love it so muchhhh!!! If only I’m able to be part of the brain storming team for ideas cause I like to see pageant from an academic perspective too hehe

  7. Great video as always. Thoughts?
MGI- I get they're trying to be different but they do way too much. Thailand knows how to put on a show, but it's like they expect their candidates to be exaggerated versions of themselves.
Supra-do I even have to? It's cheap and bland, they seem to be traditional beauty pageants but the girls who place don't even have great walks (the MU in me talking)
    Earth-never watched it
International-never watched it but Japanese are known to be very respectable. Explains why the pageant is the way it is (according to this video)
Universe-definitely the leader and most exciting. I just wish we'd see different countries (who are deserving) placing like other pageants and less of candidates placing just coz of sash factor 🙄
World-I don't watch it but I do enjoy following the past winners. It is a pretty boring show but they always crown great girls

  8. Regarding Miss World, swimwear wasn't 'replaced' by sports. Miss World had a sports challenge running concurrently with beach beauty until the latter got discontinued. Head to Head didn't replace the interview, they still have the closed door interviews, which weighs heavily on how the contestants rank in the finals.
BRW Great video. Very different from other pageant content out there, very journalistic and analytic.

  9. I think the home country’s success rate at the international pageant has a lot to do with the specific standards of the pageant and how the local pageant is already looking for that exact mold. When you watch Miss Earth for example, everytime the Philippines won, their candidate was the undeniable winner based on performance. In fact if you look at the history of this pageant, there were times when the Filipina candidate could have easily won but had to settle for a runner-up position. Such is the case in 2009 when Sandra Seifert was the obvious winner but they had to give the crown to Brazil because the Philippines had just won the year before.

It is also noteworthy to add that most Filipina Miss Earth winners didn’t do well in Binibining Pilipinas, (the local pageant that used to send winners to Miss Universe). Angelia Ong and Karen Ibasco both did not reach the semis when they competed at Binibini. Karla Henry did not even qualify as an official candidate during her Binibini attempt. Similarly Ariella Arida, who went on to place in the top 5 of Miss Universe, did not advance to the top 15 of Miss Earth Philippines. So I gues this really has to do with the specificity of the standards.
